Uncle E’s “Crazy Times Music” Collection, Prepared For “Leapin’” Herbert Tayler On April 3rd, 2009 In Redding, California U.S.A*

*Recorded with the highest fidelity equipment available with maximum noise reduction and accurate frequency response. Should you find the reproductions less than desirable, feel free to contact Uncle E at any time during the contract period for a FULL REFUND.

CD: “A Case For The Alan Parsons Project”: Play this before you play anything else! I think you may be pleasantly surprised, Mr. D. A funky Pink Floyd they are, albeit with all of the pretensions that implies. Starting with an original radio commercial for their first album, “Tales Of Mystery And Imagination” by one Orson Welles…

DTDVD I

OMD
ARCHITECTURE AND MORALITY
DAZZLE SHIPS
ORGANIZATION
ORCHESTRAL MANOEUVRES IN THE DARK

These four albums are simply brilliant early euro/electro-pop, but especially Dazzle Ships. This was way ahead of it’s time and has been cited as the “Kid-A” of the early 80’s. Great sound effects and bizarre sound experiments along side some excellent pop tunes. Kraftwerk was a major influence, especially in the way they make electronics warm and human.
BAUHAUS

Just some of their singles. Interesting to note the progression into Love & Rockets, very similar to the way New Order emerged from the ashes of Joy Division…minus the suicide, of course. Not all doom and gloom here, there was a ton of glam in ‘em as well.

BEASTIE BOYS

Paul’s Boutique Re-mastered and expanded. Self explanatory, but this remains one of the best and important albums of all time of any genre.

BEN FOLDS

Just a bunch of snippets from the Elton John of the 90’s…
BOBBY DARIN

Greatest hits, a guilty pleasure of mine.
BOZ SCAGGS

Silk Degrees, yet another guilty pleasure.

THE BRIAN JONESTOWN MASSACRE

The best bits off of three of their albums. Very 60’s sounding with a knowing nod and a wink. The title of one of their best albums, “Their Satanic Majesties Second Request” should tip you in the right direction with these guys.
BUTTHOLE SURFERS

Various scatological stuff from original mindless veterans of early punk.

BUZZCOCKS

Singles Going Steady. Because everyone should own this!
D.O.A.

War On 45, Expanded Edition. Canadian punks, but better than most. Check out the fantastic covers of Won’t Get Fooled Again, LA Woman and Folsom Prison Blues.
THE CREEPS

Enjoy The Creeps. “Sweden’s Newest Hitmakers!”, the sticker on the album said. The only retro 60’s band that did the Stones in a convincing and interesting way…

DTDVD II

DAVE EDMUNDS

Best bits off of Repeat When Necessary and Get It. Frequent collaborator with Nick Lowe, this is good old fashioned rock and roll.

DEAD KENNEDYS

Best bits from all of their studio albums. My favorite punk band off all time. Repeated listening reveals some dated lyrics but the instrumentation is still very modern and fresh sounding for most. Check out Pull My Strings, a song they played for an audience of music industry bigwigs at a “new music” convention. They were supposed to do their “hit”, California Ubber Alles” and then went into this damning tirade: “Is my cock big enough/Is my brain small enough/ For you/ To make me/ A Star…”
DEERHUNTER

Microcastle. I’ll admit I like this quite a bit! Kinda spacey, but fairly intelligent. Reminds me a bit of Stars. Think you’ll dig.
ENGLISH BEAT

I Just Can’t Stop It!. Best ska album and one of the best albums (period!) of the 80’s.
FLEETWOOD MAC

Rumours, re-mastered with some extra goodies. You probably own this, but this is one of my favorite albums of all time. NEVER a guilty pleasure listening to this, just a pleasure.

FLESHTONES

Various stuff from the garage rock vets. They do this better than all the upstarts that have come out of the woodwork in the last couple of years.
FOUNTAINS OF WAYNE

Traffic And Weather. Power pop in the same vein as Sloan. Good stuff.
FOXBORO HOT TUBS

Stop, Drop And Roll!. Green Day’s alter ego, not unlike The Dukes. Meaning the 60’s. You know…
FRANK SINATRA

Various stuff from old blue eyes. He’s just excellent. A right fucker, but excellent singer.
FRANK ZAPPA

Have I Offended Someone? His most politically incorrect numbers collected here just for you! He’s So Gay, Goblin Girl and Bobby Brown Goes Down are my personal favs.

FUNKADELIC

Free Your Mind and America Eats It’s Young, re-mastered. You probably have these…
FUTURE CLOUDS AND RADAR

Self titled. VERY Lennon-ish sounding, with some ELO thrown in for good measure. Good stuff.
GARY NUMAN

The Pleasure Principle. THIS IS A FREAKIN’ EXCELLENT SPIN. Still. By the way, what was the fascination with pyramids during the 1980’s?
GRAHAM PARKER AND THE RUMOUR

Various stuff from the same mold as Elvis Costello and Joe Jackson, ie the angry young men who can write a great pop tune.
THE DAMNED

Best of, and showcases beautifully why these guys were the best punk band of the 70’s.

DTDVD III

IAN BROWN

Various solo stuff. Don’t know about this or not, but he DID front the Stone Roses you know…
ICICLE WORKS

Self titled debut. A great lost 80’s album.
INSPIRAL CARPETS

Various greatest hits stuff. Better than I thought they were at the time, I think. Like the organ a lot.

JEAN MICHEL JARRE

Oxygene and Equinoxe, the only two albums by this French electronica pioneer you’ll ever need. Late night listening for sure.

JOE JACKSON

Night and Day and Look Sharp!. Power pop and Cole Porter New York suave, this guy was a chameleon and wrote his share of new wave classics in the meantime.
JOE STRUMMER AND THE MESCALEROS

Streetcore, released posthumously. Very good and very sad.
JOHN PRINE

Various. Just to bug the shit out of you! Listen to Jesus: The Missing Years and tell me I’m crazy for lovin’ this guy. You like-a-the-do?
JOY DIVISION

Various stuff you probably have.

LAMBCHOP

Nixon and How I Quit Smoking. The most fucked up band in Nashville, these two albums are great for late night chillin’. Nixon is a standout for me, but most critics prefer the other.

LOVE

De Capo and Forever Changes. THESE guys just might be the most overrated band of all time! Although, I must admit, Forever Changes does have some nice moments…
MERCURY REV

Snowflake Midnight. The new one, and much more electronically inclined than previous efforts. Give ‘em ONE LAST TRY, Dave.
MILES DAVIS

Birth Of The Cool. A great album and the best title for a record ever.
MINUTEMEN

Double Nickels On The Dime. A really fantastic album. If you like Gang Of Four then you should love this!

MODERN LOVERS

Debut. I included Lesbian Bar as an added bonus. Recognize the two dudes on the left?

MOJO NIXON AND SKID ROPER

Various, for old times sake.
THE LADYBUG TRANSISTOR

The Abermarle Sound. Their best. Another band from the Elephant 6 Collective. This may just be to your liking, as it gently borrows from the Burt Bacharach style of songwriting.

THE MONKEES

Various stuff. Peter’s Theme is particularly excellent.

JEFF WAYNE

War Of The Worlds. Think Alan Parsons Project but up the cheese factor considerably. A concept album at it’s worst (best?), includes ongoing narration from Richard Burton and a recurring disco beat. If you want a laugh, go to progarchives.com and see how revered/reviled this is.

DTDVD IV

NASH THE SLASH

Canada’a own bandaged sonic electric cowboy himself. Check out his version of Psychotic Reaction. I promise it’s worth your time.
NEU

Some selected extended bits and pieces. You probably already own everything these krautrockers have ever done. Included it just in case you don’t.
NEUTRAL MILK HOTEL

In The Aeroplane Over The Sea. Elephant 6’s favorite sons and the best album put forth by said collective. It’s been described as a marching band on acid and it takes quite a few listens to be taken in by it’s charm, but once in you’re hooked. I love it.
ORGONE

The Killion Floor. Funktastic recording, really really good.

OZRIC TENTACLES

Various. Like Rush and Underworld put through a blender.
PAUL WELLER

22 Dreams, his newest and his best in ages.
POLYPHONIC SPREE

The Fragile Army. I like this, but not sure how much yet. They’ve got kind of a cult thingy goin’ on here that sort of fascinates me. You may hate.
QUEEN

Uncle E’s Picks. Some hits and some deep album tracks of one of the best/cheesiest bands of all time. Ready Freddie?

RAY DAVIES

Working Man’s CafĂ©. Good, but not Kinks heyday good, unfortunately.

REM

Murmur. The only REM album I can listen to anymore, and it’s still great. Stipe wasn’t a fucking ponce yet.
ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW

OST. Glamtastic and camp to the nth degree!!!
ROXY MUSIC

Avalon and some early selections from the original art-punks.
SNIFF N THE TEARS

Fickle Heart. Driver’s Seat is the best single of all time (excluding the Beatles, of course), but this album had it’s share of other sonic pleasures too.

SQUEEZE

Argybargy DELUXE. Remastered with bonus material including a full concert. One of the best bands of the 80’s without question, and this is their best album.
SUICIDE

1st and 2nd albums. Electronic terrorists, you can hear their influence in many of today’s electronic artists. Frankie Teardrop still scares the shit out of me to this day!!!!!!!!!!!!
SUPERTRAMP

Breakfast In America, re-mastered. Just because you couldn’t have been Canadian and not loved this album. Still do.
TEENAGE HEAD

The first three albums. RIP Frankie Venom. Frantic City still has some really excellent pop tunes that you will recognize.
TEMPTATIONS

Psychedelic Soul and some greatest hits. Psychedelic Soul is a masterpiece containing all of their extended funk workouts from the late 60’s and 70’s. A 12 minute version of Papa Was A Rolling Stone? ‘Nuff said. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

THE ORB

The Dream. The newest one from Dr Patterson.
THE REPLACEMENTS

Various stuff from all of their albums. Overrated? You tell me.
THE SADIES

Favourite Colours. Another underrated Canadian band with 60’s psychedelic overtones. Good stuff!

ENJOY, HERB, AND I EXPECT A FULL ANALYSIS SHORTLY…

Coming Soon!

So here I am...again. As if I don't spend enough time on the computer with the other blog, but what the hell, eh? I have another 'pop' obsession, and it's comics. Specifically those from the 50's, 60's and 70's. E.C.'s, Marvel, underground, some DC's (Batman), independant. It's the art and the history of comics that really fascinate me, and that's what this blog will primarily focus on. It's about nostalgia as well, which is why I think this blog will be a little more personal, more self indulgent, than the other. It's a work in progress, so bear with me while it takes shape.

But it'll be fun, regardless.

We'll start with the history of E.C. comics, to be posted in the next few days. I hope you'll have as much fun reading it as I'll have writing it.
